Taps for Machining - Straight Flute, Spiral Point & Spiral Flute
Choose the right tap for your hole type and workpiece material. The main difference between these tap styles is how they manage chips during threading.
Spiral Point Taps | Gun Taps
Designed primarily for through holes. The angled cutting point pushes chips forward and out through the bottom of the hole, supporting continuous machine tapping. Particularly suitable for long-chipping materials, depending on the tap model.
Spiral Flute Taps
Designed primarily for blind holes in long-chipping materials. The spiral flutes carry chips back toward the hole entrance, helping prevent chip buildup at the bottom.
Straight Flute Taps
Particularly suitable for materials that produce short or powdery chips, such as cast iron and certain grades of brass. Available in designs for through and blind holes. Straight flutes do not actively direct chips forward or backward, so chip clearance must suit the hole depth and machining conditions.

Through holes in long-chipping materials: Choose a spiral point tap.

Blind holes in long-chipping materials: Choose a spiral flute tap.

Short-chipping or powdery-chip materials: Choose a straight flute tap designed for the material.
For the correct fit, check each product’s recommended workpiece materials, thread size and pitch, tapping depth, coating, and chamfer type.
